Glossary Marceau
This is a glossary for history. My CÉGEP program isn't exactly about history, but I did have History classes, and it gives me the opportunity to study history at University.
- Civilisation
- noun
- An advanced stage of cultural and/or social development.
- Example: It was an advanced civilisation.
- fr: Civilisation

- Culture
- noun
- Defines an ensemble of a human group that has a shared belief/value/goal etc
- Example: They had different cultural values.
- fr: Culture

- Revolution
- noun
- A forcible overthrow of a government or social order, in favor of a new system.
- Example: A cultural revolution that defines future development.
- fr: Revolution

- Armistice
- noun
- An agreement made by opposing sides in a war to stop fighting for a certain time; a truce.
- Example: The opposing countries made an armistice.
- fr: Armistice

- Sacrilege
- noun
- Violation or misuse of what is regarded as sacred.
- Example: His sacrilege led to his end.
- fr: sacrilège

- Demography
- noun
- The study of statistics such as births, deaths, income, or the incidence of disease, which illustrate the changing structure of human populations.
- Example: The demography of that country in the 12th century was eye opening.

- Democracy
- noun
- A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
- Example: That's when democracy appeared.

- Empire
- noun
- An extensive group of states or countries under a single supreme authority, formerly especially an emperor or empress.
- Example: The empire became gradually extended.

- Patriot
- noun
- A person who vigorously supports their country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors.
- Example: The patriots were supporting their cause.

- War
- noun
- A state of armed conflict between different nations or states or different groups within a nation or state.
- Example: The war between the U.S. and the Russians began once again.

- Hieroglyph
- noun
- A stylized picture of an object representing a word, syllable, or sound, as found in ancient Egyptian and other writing systems.
- Example: The Egyptians used hieroglyphs to write.

- Liberty
- noun
- The state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views.
- Example: They fought for their liberty.
- fr: Liberté

- Martyred
- verb
- Kill (someone) because of their beliefs.
- Example: The student was martyred for his beliefs.
- fr: Martyriser

- Exile
- noun
- The state of being barred from one's native country, typically for political or punitive reasons.
- Example: The king was exiled by his people.

- Guerrilla
- noun
- A member of a small independent group taking part in irregular fighting, typically against larger regular forces.
- Example: This small town fell to the guerrillas.

- Inuit
- noun
- A member of an indigenous people of northern Canada and parts of Greenland and Alaska.
- Example: They were mistaken for Inuit.

- Monarchy
- noun
- A form of government with a monarch at the head.
- Example: Monarchy was the governments form.

- Pest
- noun
- A destructive insect or other animal that attacks crops, food, livestock, etc.
- Example: The pest was the cause of their famine.

- Resistance
- noun
- The refusal to accept or comply with something; the attempt to prevent something by action or argument.
- Example: The resistance was victorious.

- Savage
- noun
- A brutal or vicious person.
- Example: They were said to be savage.
